Everywhere you look something interesting catches your eye: the curve of a bridge, the natural sculpture of an upright stone, moss growing on an ancient lantern. No single view allows us to make sense of the whole, the Japanese garden reveals itself only detail by detail... To enjoy the hushed silence of a Kyoto garden is to appreciate the Japanese aesthetic, which puts great value on what is implied not shown.

Very interesting... I do not think I have ever read a modern-day account of Japanese gardens that is this critical. Those tiny frontyard and courtyard gardens are really cool; they really ought to be given more attention.
